Melbourne council includes:

Tree Removal Permit

A Local Law permit will be required to remove a tree if the tree: 

  1. Is on the significant tree register https://www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/media/11411/download?inline 
  2. Is considered a canopy trees 

Canopy trees have a circumference of: 

  • 110cm or more, measured at 1.5m above ground level; or 
  • 150cm or more at ground level. 

If a canopy tree is dead, still need to apply and council will send their arborist out to confirm. 

If the tree has multiple stems, the circumference is the total of the stems.

Tree Pruning

You don’t need a permit to prune a canopy tree if according to Australian standard. 

Neighbouring trees

 As a neighbouring property owner, you can prune any leaves or branches that hang over onto your property. This must be done at your own cost and you must not damage the tree.
